Richard Bilton is the Vice President of E-commerce Engineering at 3Z Brands, the parent company of several of the most-recognized direct-to-consumer mattress brands in North America. A Certified Sleep Consultant with nearly a decade of experience in the mattress industry, Richard leads the digital and engineering teams that build the configurators, mattress quizzes, and decision tools millions of shoppers use to find the best mattress for their body, sleep style, and budget.
Credentials and Background
Richard earned his Sleep Consultant Diploma from Gateway Workshops in 2024, with coursework covering sleep behavior, sleep hygiene, and the role bedding plays in restorative rest. Before joining 3Z Brands as Director of Technology in March 2023 — and stepping into his current VP role in January 2026 — he spent nearly five years at Leesa Sleep in roles spanning lead front-end developer, senior manager of application development, and director of technology. He began his career as a front-end engineer in the Manchester area of the United Kingdom.
Areas of Expertise
Richard writes and consults on the topics he works with every day, including:
- How hybrid mattresses are built — and what makes the best hybrid mattress for side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers
- The differences between memory foam, latex, innerspring, and hybrid mattress constructions
- Firmness, support, and pressure relief across different body types and sleep positions
- Cooling technologies, breathability, and temperature regulation in modern mattresses
- How mattress design affects back pain, hip pain, and overall sleep quality
Philosophy
“Sleep is deeply personal. The best hybrid mattress for one person can be the wrong one for someone else. Our job is to give shoppers the information and the tools to find their match, not push them toward the most expensive option.”
Richard’s view is that the best mattress isn’t a single product — it’s the right match for the sleeper. The right firmness, the right construction, and the right price for the person buying it.
