What is the Best Mattress for Kids?
When your child was a baby, choosing a crib mattress was probably pretty simple—there wasn’t an endless selection of crib mattresses from which to choose. But in a blink, they outgrow their crib, they're potty training, and at 2 or 3 years old, they're active!
Your child's first "big kid" mattress will be the mattress your child will likely have from toddler to teen. So support for your child's growing body made with breathable materials that are certified safe is a great place to start.
A healthy mattress for kids
The Leesa Kids Mattress, Leesa Youth Mattress, and Leesa Trundle Mattress are all GREENGUARD Gold Certified—one of the best certifications in the industry. This is important to consider, particularly when purchasing products for kids.
Protected by a chemical-free and fiberglass-free fire barrier, all Leesa mattresses are designed and assembled in the Arizona Dream Factory, certified to be manufactured without ozone depleters, phthalates, BPDE, formaldehyde, or heavy metals.
In other words, a Leesa Mattress is a healthy mattress—all other amazing features aside, that's really the #1 best mattress for growing kids (in our humble opinion).
But that's just the start. The features and benefits get even better from here.

How do I choose the best mattress for my child?
Contrary to popular belief, not all kids prefer a soft mattress; in fact, medium-firm mattresses for kids are the top sellers, from Twin beds to Queen-sized beds and bunk beds to trundles.
Consider
size
value
eco-friendly materials
support
comfort
temperature regulation
Though personal preference is the most important gauge, it’s a good idea to start by deciding how much support your child needs.
Support
Support comes from the materials used to make the mattress.Today, there are a range of materials and combinations of materials:
Foam
Latex mattresses like the Leesa Natural Hybrid
Individually wrapped coils
Foam/spring combo (like our most popular seller, the Sapira Hybrid mattress for the big kid in all of us)
A memory foam mattress is an excellent all-round choice for kids, offering comfort, support, and pressure relief for their growing bodies. These mattresses are durable enough for active kids and have enough give for stomach sleepers.
Look for a breathable, soft cover to add comfort to the right amount of support, and your child will sleep soundly no matter their child’s age, sleep position, or body weight.
What size mattress is best for young kids?
Do kids move from cribs to king beds? Yes, sometimes they do! But more often than not, Twin, Twin XL, Full, and Queen mattresses are the popular sizes for kids mattresses:
Twin
A Twin mattress is the best space-saving option, especially if your kids share a room. Twins are the next size up from crib mattresses, at 38 inches by 75 inches. Most bunk beds need two Twins mattresses. Choosing the right mattress for a bunk bed is crucial to ensure safety and comfort for your child.
Twin XL
A Twin XL mattress, which is probably what you had in your college dorm room, is great if your child already fills out a Twin and gives them some growing room, literally. A Twin XL is 38 inches by 80 inches, 5 inches longer than a Twin.
For bunk beds, consider the mattress thickness and safety features like guard rails to ensure your child’s safety. Additionally, the durability of a Twin XL mattress makes it a long-lasting option.
Full or Queen
A Full mattress, a.k.a. a Double, is the next size up from a Twin mattress. A Full is 53 inches by 75 inches, and provides a little more space. However, it may not be long enough as your kid gets taller.
A Queen mattress is 60 inches by 80 inches. If you purchase a quality product, like the Leesa or Leesa Hybrid mattress, your kid may get the most mileage out of a Full or Queen size mattress. Additionally, these mattresses often use non-toxic materials, ensuring a safer sleeping environment for your child.
Here is the complete rundown of all Leesa mattresses.
How do I know if my child needs a new mattress?
Once your kiddo is a toddler, they may sleep better with more space and less firmness than their crib mattress.
Hypoallergenic mattresses prevent allergen buildup, making them ideal for children with environmental allergies (to dust mites, for example), thus enhancing their sleep quality with a breathable mattress.
Aside from their age, a visible indicator that it may be time for a new mattress is if your young child has physically outgrown their crib mattress.
