What's the difference between mattress types?

With so many different types of mattresses on the market and new technologies being released all the time, how do you know which mattress type is right for you? Let's start with the basics.

Most mattresses can be categorized into a few types:

The Difference Is Inside

Innerspring, foam, pocket springs — what's the difference?

  • Innerspring

    Innerspring

An innerspring mattress features a coil support system. The shape, coil gauge, and the number of coils can vary by mattress. Innerspring mattresses can break down over time and tend to get squeaky with age.

  • Foams

    Foams

Foam mattresses offer comfort and support through all-foam makeup. There are a few different types of foams used in mattresses, the combination of which offers varying levels of firmness.

  • Pocket Springs

    Pocket Springs

A pocket spring mattress offers support through a base layer of pocket springs. Unlike innerspring, pocket springs are individually wrapped to work independently and offer targeted pressure relief.

Replace your mattress

How often should you replace your mattress?

There's no magic number of years a mattress should last, but it may be time for a new mattress if: you're waking up with aches and pains; your mattress is lumpy, uneven or smelly (or all of the above!), or; your mattress is more than 10 years old.
