How to Make a Bed: Get the Perfect Look in 8 Easy Steps

Share:

It's well-known that making your bed every morning has many benefits, including improving sleep quality and boosting your focus. It helps set a productive tone for your day and can even improve your mood. But what if you don't know how to make a bed?

Only a third of Americans make their beds on a daily basis. Like most people, you probably focus your household cleaning efforts on common areas that guests and other family members see. Maybe you never learned to make your bed. Maybe you've forgotten how.

Don't fret. Making your bed is pretty straightforward. It doesn't even have to feel like a chore. With these easy-to-follow steps, you can achieve your #bedgoals and turn your bedroom into a relaxing sanctuary

  1. Start With a Bed Skirt

The first step to making your bed is putting on the bed skirt. Who knew skirts weren't just in style for people?

The bed skirt is the fringe of cloth you see under most beds. It covers the bed frame and hides anything you may have stashed below. While some people opt not to use a bed skirt, it can add a touch of coordination to your room.

How to put on a bed skirt

Putting on a bed skirt is a five-step process, and you'll probably need another person to help you.

  1. Take the mattress off the bed and prop it against a nearby wall.

  2. Place the bed skirt over the platform or box spring.

  3. Center the bed skirt so the panels hang over the sides.

  4. Place the mattress on top of the bed skirt.

  5. Pull the bed skirt from the sides to straighten and adjust it as needed.

Platform-free bed skirts are also available. These bed skirts aren't connected by a large piece of fabric that must be placed under the mattress. Instead, they are joined by buttons or closures that meet at the corners. Many people prefer this type of bed skirt because it requires no heavy lifting.

  1. Add Your Mattress Topper

A mattress topper is a layer of foam, latex, or other soft fillings on top of your mattress. The benefits of mattress toppers can range from added support to temperature control. You can use your mattress topper to reach the perfect balance for a great night's sleep without investing in a new mattress.

How to put on a mattress topper

Putting a mattress topper on your bed is a straightforward process. Simply roll out your mattress topper so that it lies flat on the mattress and align the corners of your topper with the corners of your bed.

  1. Slide on a Mattress Protector

If you don't already have a mattress protector, it's a good idea to add one. Your mattress protector prevents dust, sweat, and pollen from sinking into your mattress. It also prevents stains, spills and pet accidents from ruining your mattress. A high-quality tencel mattress protector ensures you can get the best use of your mattress and topper.

How to put on a mattress protector

Putting a mattress protector on is easy.

  • Ensure that your mattress protector is square on your mattress.

  • Put the mattress protector over the mattress topper.

  • Stretch the elasticized corners over the edges of the bed, tucking them under the mattress.

  1. Wrestle with a Fitted Sheet (Or Don’t With This Hack)

Fitted sheets sometimes get a reputation for being hard to work with, but it's time to learn how to put on that fitted sheet without all the fuss.

The fitted sheet lays on your bed right-side up so that the seams of the sheet touch the mattress, not your body. If you aren't sure which side is up, check for a tag. Most manufacturers place tags in the bottom right corner of the fitted sheet—look for the tag and you'll be good to go!

How to put on fitted bed sheets

Most sheet sets come with both a fitted and flat sheet. The fitted sheet has elastic or a stretchy band around the corners.

  • Match the tag on the fitted sheet to the bottom right corner of your bed.

  • Pull the elasticized corner of the fitted sheet over your mattress protector and tuck it under the mattress.

  • Stretch the sheet to the upper left corner of the bed, then tuck it in.

  • Repeat steps 2-3 on the other two corners of the bed.

  1. Tuck in Your Flat Sheet

Once your fitted sheet is secured, it's time to add the flat sheet. Follow these steps to make "hospital corners" so that the final product is picture-perfect.

  • Lay your flat sheet on top of your bed so that the right side is facing down. This adds a finished touch when you turn down the covers.

  • Go to the end of the bed. Tuck the sheet between the mattress and box spring so that no loose fabric is hanging down.

  • Grab the material left hanging from the bottom right corner of the bed. Pull it out so that it drapes in a triangle shape.

  • Tuck the bottom part of the triangle between the mattress and the box spring.

  • Pull the remaining fabric down so that it forms a 45-degree angle, then tuck it beneath the mattress.

  • Repeat the corner process on the other side of the bed.

  • Tuck in the sides of the flat sheet.

Of course, there are different ways to make a bed, so if you don't like the tight feel of hospital corners, you can loosely tuck your sheet in around the bottom and sides of your bed without folding in the corners.

  1. Add a Duvet Cover or Cozy Comforter

Now it's time to top your bed with a comforter. To cut down on laundry, use a duvet cover with your comforter.

What is a duvet cover? This special cover acts much like a pillowcase and protects your comforter from dust, allergens, dirt, and sweat.

How to put on a duvet cover

Putting a duvet cover on might seem like a struggle, but it doesn't have to be. Use the roll method:

  • Turn the duvet cover inside out, then lay it flat on your bed or floor.

  • Lay your comforter on top of the duvet cover.

  • Roll the cover over the quilt until the whole bundle is rolled up.

  • Put your hand inside the opening of the duvet cover, then pull your comforter through.

  • Secure the duvet cover with its zipper or buttons.

How to put on a comforter

Lay your comforter on the bed with the top edge just a bit lower than the flat sheet. To create a layered look, pull back the top sheet so that it folds over the comforter.

  1. Arrange Your Pillows

Some people like a dozen pillows to keep them propped and plush, while others prefer only a few. From decorative pillows to practical ones, you have no shortage of options.

For a minimalist bed, arrange two pillows propped at the head of the bed; use pillowcases the same color as your sheets. For a more finished look, stack decorative pillows or bed pillows with coordinating shams in front of your regular pillows.

Our premium foam Pillow makes a great addition to your bedscape. It supports your neck at night, and it can prop up your decorative pillows by day. Our customizable Hybrid Pillow with cooling gel can also boost the comfort of your bed.

  1. Finish With Throw Pillows and Blankets

Top off your beautiful bedding with stylish finishing touches, or opt for simplicity. It's all about what brings you joy.

Adding some throw pillows in fun shapes can make your bed pop. Finish with a throw blanket that you can use to nap on top of the covers or cuddle up while reading.
